Bath Time

Rumour has it Bath is a great place to visit when bursting the Windsor bubble. Samantha and I travelled part of the way together. I caught a bus and two trains on my own, then Samantha joined me for the final train. My day out consisted of one bus, six trains and one Uber.

You may have also heard the rumours that train travel in England is expensive. This is true. With the Trainline App, booking in advance, and travelling outside peak times I scored the return trip for £20. This was a bargain price.

Bath is quite a pretty city, even the times it rained. You can't go to Bath without expecting a little water.

For £11 each, we spent part of the Bath showers in the Jane Austen Centre.

The self guided tour began with an introductory history lesson about the Austen family.

Jane's mother moved her and her sister to Bath to find husbands. Neither of them did. I too did not find a husband, even though I dressed up especially for the trip.

I too am surprised my bonnet only briefly wooed a lover.

But he wouldn't even look at me.

He was such a smug mute.

Perhaps my fan skills weren't up to scratch.

Or maybe it was because I've never read a Jane Austen novel or seen a film based on her books. Jane Austen was disappointed when she found out.

I left the museum inspired to read a Jane Austen classic. I'll be sure to let you know if I ever follow through on this inspiration.

Shortly after leaving the museum Samantha and I discovered the independent book shop, Mr B's Emporium of Reading Delights. We explored the many levels of books, which included a bath and a reading room.

Next it was time to find out how the Romans bathed back in the day. We spent almost 2 hours, and £17 each to explore the ruins, which included really old rocks, statues, gravestones, and mosaics dating back to 3 or 4 AD.

I totally would've taken a bath, but I forgot my body wash.

If you can afford to catch an earlier train to Bath it would be worth spending an extra £4 on a ticket. £21 can get you a ticket to the Roman Baths, Fashion Museum and Art Gallery.

After a day of exploring our stomachs needed filling and we found just the perfect place for it. The Cosy Club had lots of delicious food on the menu.

Ok, so my budget and diet wouldn't let me sample it all. The mouthwatering descriptions in the menu, and the dishes Samantha and I did sample, have me assured any selection would be divine.

If you're not on a budget or trapped in a self imposed lifelong diet prison you can accompany your meal with a cut price bevie.

We had about two hours to kill at the restaurant before our kind of late train(s) back. Normally restaurant will try to push you out quickly. Samantha and I ate kind of slowly, then feigned interest in the dessert menu, but the staff were so friendly and patient I don't think our blatant time wasting tactics were necessary.

I left Bath as a washed up spinster with fond memories of a lovely day out. The 3 hour journey back was all kittens and rainbows.
